Speech delay is common problem in children. A large number of children fail to meet development milestones and require intervention. Some of the common causes of speech delay in children are as follows.
- Isolation, children raised in isolation, nuclear families etc. have higher chances of speech delay because they don’t interact with other people as often.
- Children with excessive screen time also sometimes have speech delay.
- Hearing problems sometimes are associated with speech delay among children. As hair impairment prevents them from learning new words. Hearing problems are usually mild and temporary, but need timely medical intervention to prevent them getting worse.
- Oral muscle problems are sometimes cause speech delay and can usually be addressed with oral motor exercises, which are usually part of speech therapy.
- Speaking multiple languages sometimes cause speech delay. It prevents child ability to concentrate on single language. This type of delay is usually temporary.
- Autism is a brain development disorder usually associated with speech delay. A child might need speech therapy along with other therapies.
- Family history also play role, if parent of child has speech issues, there is a risk that child might have it.
Speech therapy is often required in most of the cases for speech delay , stuttering or other speech disorders.
